Use Fear to Your Advantage…It’s There to Show You the Way!!

With another life changing, fear wrenching, boundary pushing event coming up for me in two days, it’s made me reflect on what I do to turn my fear around to become excitement instead of allowing fear to consume me…

I’ve always pushed my fear boundaries in areas where my soul is telling me I need to grow, even though what I was about to do scared the pants off me…

Doot doot back 27 years when I walked into a karaoke bar in the USA and the moment I walked through that door I had an overwhelming feeling that tonight was the night that I had to get up and sing…

I had NEVER sung in public before and apparently I wasn’t leaving until I did…

And while I was shitting myself at the idea, I knew that the fear of regret would plague me big time afterwards if I didn’t…

This moment had to happen NOW!!

I asked another girl if she would get up with me and she said yes…

That was a moment that changed my life forever…

Up until that point, I was scared of the microphone…

But after that point, I came home and I started going to karaoke shows and within a year I was hosting them…

The next year, I met my partner at a karaoke show. He was a cabaret artist who had joined in on the new karaoke fad and had his own business. I started working for him and never looked back…

Around 1995, I decided to enter a talent quest that had a backing band…

I organised charts…I rehearsed dancers…I was nervous…

I’d never worked with a band before…this was a whole new ball game…

I got up onstage…we started and everything was going fine until I instinctively looked down for a TV screen…

What I hadn’t realised was that even though I knew the words to the song, because I’d been running karaoke shows the TV screen with the words on it had become a safety net…

My mind went completely BLANK!!

Here I was with a band playing and two dancers, losing my place in the song because the words just disappeared from my mind PLUS I had no idea how to communicate with a band…

I wanted to shrivel up into a little ball BUT…

I made the decision that night that I could either crawl under a rock and hide for the rest of my life OR I could find a way to remember the lyrics to songs…

I chose the latter and in 2000, I was standing on stage in Hannover, Germany performing at the World Expo 2000 with my partner, Will and our band…

That led to further appearances for both of us throughout Europe for the next six years and an entertainment career that has now spanned 25 years from the moment I first stepped on stage professionally…

On Monday night, I’m getting up on stage to do my first ever stand up comedy routine…

For the past two weeks, I’ve felt my emotions go from being ‘OMG! What have I got myself into!’ to excitement…

I can feel it within my soul that this is another boundary I need to push HARD!!

The life we ALL want is on the other side of our fears and I honestly believe this moment is going to fill in so many blanks for me and open up so many new doors, just as getting up at that karaoke show in the States and entering that talent quest have done…

I’ve had a really good look at the process I go through to turn everything around so I can push myself through my fear instead of allowing it to overwhelm me…

The main catalyst is the fear of regret…

That fear overpowers the fear of…I guess it’s the fear of making a fool out of myself in front of people…

But I’ve been onstage and had a mental blank before…

I’ve had stages collapse while I was walking on them…

I’ve even had a wardrobe malfunction…

But I didn’t die…

Each time my soul grew more than I could ever have imagined…

In leaps and bounds!

If I can leave you with this if you’re struggling to push yourself to do something you know within you that you REALLY need to do to move forward but fear is holding you back…

– Be prepared for what you need to do right now to push your boundaries but DON’T focus on it…

– Divert your focus to the outcome on the other side…

– Let the feelings of doing the things that you dream of doing that will happen AFTER you push this boundary…

And let those feelings excite you!!

If you want to be a singer, see yourself standing on that stage with the career you desire, singing like a bird…

See the opportunities that will come as a result of taking this step…

You can apply this to ANY area of your life that you desire to change…

Be prepared for the leap of faith you’re about to take, but don’t focus wholly and solely on your fears because they will overwhelm you…if you let them…

YOU have the power to change everything…

See everything going well in your mind…

Even create a backup plan of what you’ll do if ‘such or such’ happens, but don’t focus on it…

Be light hearted about it but be prepared…

See everything going well and your star shining…

And yeah, you could crash and burn but KNOW that there’s no such thing as failure…

You won’t believe how much growth and strength comes from these experiences…

And YOU’RE A CHAMPION SIMPLY BECAUSE YOU DID IT!!!

You did what most people WON’T…

Don’t be afraid of an audience…

They truly want to support you and most will be in awe that you’ve had the courage to do something they’re too afraid to do…

Don’t let fear hold you back…

Fear is there to protect you but it’s not there to stand in the way of your dreams…

Sometimes it gets a bit bossy and confused and thinks it needs to keep you safe from everything…

Thank it, let it know you’re all good and invite it to come along and enjoy the ride…

Take a deep breath, be prepared for what’s in front of you BUT keep your head and your heart focused on where you’re going…

You don’t have to be the best on the night and you don’t have to win the trophy…

You only need to push your comfort zone boundaries to conquer your fear…

Because that is what will make you a winner in life in more ways that you’ll ever imagine…
